Driven by a lifelong passion that began in second grade, Makenzie Usher transitioned from a standout competitor in Milton, Wisconsin, to a dedicated coach for the Craig High School girls' team and Askren Wrestling Academy. As a former state qualifier and placer, she draws on her experience as often the only female in the room to instill a relentless offensive style and a "drive-to-prove" mentality in her athletes. Makenzie views wrestling as a vital stepping stone, coaching not just to build elite wrestlers, but to develop disciplined, high-character individuals ready for the real world. She is a firm believer that success is never linear, emphasizing that unwavering consistency through the highs and lows is the true key to progress. When she isn't on the mats, Makenzie fuels her love for life by traveling and exploring the outdoors to meet new people. Her mission remains clear: to empower the next generation of wrestlers to stay in control of their matches and their futures.
I started when I was in second grade. I grew up in Milton, WI and joined the youth program at the time. That was when I fell in love with wrestling. My turning point in this sport was when I was showing up to practices and tournaments as the only female wrestler there. It gave me that drive to keep up with the boys and prove I was just as good. A few accolades of mine would be high school state qualifier and state placer!
Growing up often as the only female in the room, Makenzie channeled that experience into fuel. She developed a relentless offensive style and an unshakeable drive to prove herself, finishing her high school career as a state qualifier and state placer in Milton, WI.
I coach for the girls high school team at Craig High School during the fall-winter wrestling season. I also have coached at AWA (Askren Wrestling Academy) for the girls classes. I coach because I love the discipline and lessons this sport has taught me. I want to be a stepping stone for these athletes to become not only just great wrestlers, but great people in the real world.
